Book Summaries
A collection of summaries and key takeaways from books that have shaped my thinking. I focus on books about Stoic philosophy, self-improvement, mental models, and career development.
Stoic Philosophy
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius
The book Meditations takes a look into the life of the 1st century Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. It was meant to be a personal journal and never meant to be published. The 10 chapters are random thoughts and musings --- sometimes disjointed, often repetitive, but always insightful. Marcus Aurelius's philosophy is aligned to the Stoic school of thought, founded by Seneca and Epictetus.
Manual for Living by Epictetus
This summary explores the profound philosophical principles of Stoicism as highlighted in Epictetus' influential work, the Manual. It covers timeless lessons on locus of control, perception vs. reality, expectations, self-fulfilling prophecies, and more.
Self-Improvement
Make Your Bed by William H. McRaven
Make Your Bed is a really short book that packs a punch. It is written by retired Navy SEAL Commander William H. McRaven. He talks through his unique experience of being a Navy SEAL and the rigorous training that he went through and how that prepared him for life. The book is the result of the talk he gave at the University of Texas.
Career and Creativity
Show Your Work by Austin Kleon
Show Your Work is one of the foundational career-related books I read in 2018-19 that shaped how I look to build my online presence, and as a result, a big part of my career. Key themes include sharing your work openly online rather than working in secrecy, and building proof-of-work through sharing to create "a line and not a dot" relationship with others.
