Product Hunt Launch Tips
Launching on Product Hunt is usually a big deal -- you can get a load of new customers, get good feedback, and make a splash. I have launched a product that was #1 Product of the Day, and here are the key things to keep in mind when launching.
It is a Full-Day Event
Firstly, it is an entire day event. Do not schedule it on a day that you are going to be busy with something else. You will need the time to constantly promote the launch post on social media, in communities, and DMs.
Clear your calendar. This is not something you can do on the side.
Preparation -- Compile Resources
The preparation phase involves compiling and creating the resources before the launch. Get everything ready ahead of time:
- Product images and GIFs -- create high-quality visuals that showcase your product.
- Launch copy -- write a compelling tagline and description.
- Social media posts -- prepare posts for Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and other channels.
- Community posts -- draft messages for Slack groups, Discord servers, and relevant communities.
- Email to your list -- write the newsletter or email blast ahead of time.
The more you prepare in advance, the smoother launch day will be.
Finding a Hunter
Finding a top hunter is less important now than it was before. So do not go to only the top hunters -- reach out to people on Twitter in your niche who have good engagement.
Product Hunt still sends emails to the followers of hunters, so that helps get more upvotes. But if you do not get a top hunter, no worries -- you can always launch by yourself.
Launch Day Timing
Make sure that you launch at 12am PST. This is to ensure you have the maximum time for the post to get traction. You can also schedule the launches now, so you do not need to be awake at 12am PST for it to be visible on Product Hunt.
Promote Across All Channels
On the day of the launch, you should post on all channels:
- Twitter -- post the launch and use a launch thread to keep the momentum going.
- LinkedIn -- share with your professional network.
- Instagram -- post stories and a feed post.
- Slack groups -- share in relevant communities.
- Discord servers -- post in channels where your audience hangs out.
- Newsletter -- send an email to your subscribers.
Now is the time to ask for help from your friends and followers. Do not be shy about it -- people are generally happy to support, but they need to know about your launch first.
Use a Launch Thread
Use your launch thread on Twitter to update everyone on:
- The position of the day (e.g., "#3 Product of the Day")
- Number of upvotes
- Number of comments
- Milestones and wins
This keeps the excitement going and encourages more people to check out your product and upvote.
After the Launch
The work does not end when the day is over. After the launch:
- Share your learnings -- write a post about what worked and what did not. People love reading launch retrospectives.
- Stay top of mind -- continue to engage with the people who discovered you through Product Hunt.
- Follow up with leads -- reach out to people who commented or showed interest.
Product Hunt can be a powerful launchpad for your product, but it requires preparation, dedication, and a full day of hustle. Plan ahead, show up on launch day, and make the most of the opportunity.
